Steven Baris

Steven Baris’ Malerei spielt mit der Dreidimensionalität auf der zweidimensionalen Oberfläche seiner Plexiglasplatten. Einerseits suggeriert Baris durch die Variation in Grösse und Form geometrischer Figuren Raumtiefe, andererseits trägt er Farben so dick auf, dass Sie räumliche Tiefe bekommen. Unterstützt wird dieses Spiel von der Transparenz der Farben und dem Plexiglasuntergrund, der das Licht und die Struktur des Hintergrundes hindurchscheinen lässt.

Nach seiner Ausbildung zum Master of Fine Arts an der Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia erweiterte Steven Baris seinen Künstlerischen Horizont am Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Artist Statement:

"I am interested in how painted surfaces are able to evoke the most rudimentary experiences of proximity and distance. My paintings explore how these surfaces are as likely to frustrate as to satisfy the viewer’s expectations of depth. The work is loosely inspired by my daily excursions through the suburban landscape where similar challenges to spatial orientation are all too common.

Clearly I am not making illusionary depictions of spatial depth; rather, I am interested in the painterly rhetoric of depth. I explore this by deploying a limited stock of visual cues and motifs that are randomly distributed (and/or clustered) across the surfaces. It is crucial for my purposes that these surfaces – indeed the actual substrates themselves – vary a great deal in their degree of transparency. I rely heavily on the physical properties of the materials to accentuate the oppositions of surface and depth."

Richard Bottwin

Der in New York lebende Künstler Richard Bottwin arbeitet in seinen neusten Werken mit massiven Holzplatten und Acryl bemalten Holzoberflächen. Die teils parallele teils asymmetrische Anordnung der Bauteile zueinander verleihen Bottwins Objekte ein Gefühl der Bewegung und Unruhe, welches den statischen Holzplatten eine Leichtigkeit und Dynamik verleiht.

Artist Statement:

”In my work I enjoy creating paradoxes and unexpected relationships that reveal themselves during the visual progression around the sculptures. Using a vocabulary of forms that refer to architecture, my intent with the wall pieces is to present something apparently straightforward and predictable. Then I like to subvert the initial perception with the inference of kinetic activity and weightlessness. The sculptures are painted with primary colors that have been pushed to be slightly "off." Barely perceptible violets are laid down under dense blue glazes. Yellows push toward green or orange. Reds may have a violet or orange cast. The desired result of this manipulation of form, color and gravity is an experience that is at once slightly disorienting, amusing, and mysterious.”

Kevin Finklea

Aritist Statement:

"New work almost always begins with what I believe I want to do with the color. I think of a painting's color as a tunable attribute. Some paintings I get in tune instantly while others become a nightmare of overpainting and sanding...Deciding upon the final colors I make is never certain and would be best viewed as an idiosyncratic process...I strive for a brittle balance between the colors, composition and the thing they are painted upon."

I would like to say that just about everything I paint is an approximation. A constant response to my work is its perfection. I assure you that nothing I paint is perfect. I can't imagine a perfect painting being made by anything less than a machine. I believe that work...is far more interesting for its failures...The small imperfections and variegations made by my hand make a surface far more interesting than anything I've seen made by machine. I intend this to provide the viewer with a little bit more to look at than what the average dot matrix screen is capable of showing."

Kathryn Frund

Die in Nordamerika tätige Künstlerin Kathryn Frund vereint in Ihren mit Collage und Mischtechnik auf Holz entstandenen Arbeiten Anleihen aus der Geschichte (Pergamente, Verse aus der Bibel etc.) mit einer dezidierten Landschaftsmalerei zu komplexen Werken auf kleinstem Raum.

Kathryn Frund studierte Kunst am Cleveland Institute of Art (Cleveland OH) und bildete sich unter anderem an der Hartford Art School (Hartford CT), und an der School of Visual Arts in New York weiter

Artist Statement:

"My paintings and assemblages address the relationship between man and the environment through the use of symbolic landscapes. I explore the concepts of stewardship, consumption and control within the landscape framework. Society’s “marks” on the landscape and the manipulation of the environment are ongoing issues I seek to discuss.

The landscape explorations began during my studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art. The paintings have continuously evolved, initially influenced by Romanticism, Modernism and Surrealism, and by the turn-of-the-century poets such as T. S. Eliot.

In 1988, I started traveling to northern New Mexico. Inspired by the vastness and spiritual character of the landscape, and the rich presence of ancient cultures, my work began to reflect the region’s respect for the stewardship of the land and it’s resources.

This ongoing theme remains present in my recent work. The paintings address the conjunction of nature, technology and spirituality. They examine and define these fragile bonds through the juxtaposition of found objects, landscape imagery and the written word."

Franco Müller

Franco Müller ist als Maler tief verwurzelt mit seiner Heimat Solothurn, wo er mit seiner Familie lebt. Seine Künstlerische Tätigkeit aber hat Anerkennung weit über die Landesgrenzen hinaus erfahren, so dass Franco Müller heute nicht nur von knapp einem halben Dutzend Gallerien in der Schweiz sondern auch von der Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia mit grossem Erfolg vertreten wird.

Artist Statement:

„Ich male Bilder, weil ich noch nicht genug Bilder gesehen habe, um damit zufrieden zu sein. Wir leben zwar in einer Bilderflut und oberflächlich betrachtet, können wir in unserer Gesellschaft eine billige Monokultur der Bilder feststellen. Sie werben aggressiv für ein Paradies, bestehend aus Hochglanzlächeln und sündhaft teuren Massenartikeln. Dazwischen wächst aber auch eine Art Unkraut. Stille Bilder, welche die Euphorie aus fernen Galaxien zurückholt. Hier möchte ich mit meiner Malerei einen Beitrag leisten. Deshalb habe ich ein naheliegends Sujet ausgesucht: die «Landschaft» um mich herum.

Zuerst Gerümpel und Kammern, die Landschaft im Zimmer. Dann die wirkliche Umgebung mit Häusern und Gärten und mit der Zeit «selbstständige» Landschaften, die in Anlehnung an die beobachtete Umgebung entstehen.

Mit der Auseinandersetzung kommt auch die Routine und viele Gespräche wie etwas funktioniert. Ich mache aber die Erfahrung, dass ich beim Malen vernünftigerweise alle Vorsätze und guten Absichten zuerst vergesse, um mich an die stillen Bilder halten zu können. Erst wenn das Bild dem Gefühl nach fertig gemalt scheint, ist wieder Kritik möglich.

Sie ist schliesslich notwendig, weil das nächste Bild auch zur selben «Familie» gehören soll. Ich hoffe, mit meinem Weg in den Bildern einen roten Faden zu knüpfen. Keine Gegenwelt sondern eine sanfte Landung in der Wirklichkeit unscheinbarer Orte. Ein freies Parkfeld, eine Allerweltsstrassenkreuzung mit Kandelabern, 0815-lndustriegebäude und Ähnliches.“
